Unboxing and first impressions of the RedMagic 6

A RedMagic 6 running Asphalt 9

Earlier this month, RedMagic introduced its latest pair of gaming phones, the RedMagic 6 and 6 Pro. As always, these packs the latest and greatest silicon from Qualcomm – in this case, the Snapdragon 888 – and other top-tier specs like UFS 3.1 storage and LPDDR5 RAM.

A few things set this phone apart from other high-end phones, and one of the most notable is the high refresh rate display. It’s now pretty standard to see 120Hz on flagships, but RedMagic decided to push for a world first by putting a 165Hz AMOLED panel in the RedMagic 6 series. It’s also a bigger display than previous RedMagic phones, at 6.8 inches, and that’s because it’s slightly taller, going from a 19.5:9 aspect ratio to 20:9.

There are other factors that gamers might appreciate here. First, RedMagic builds a fan directly inside the phone’s body, and is still the only company to do so. This new fan spins at up to 20,000RPM, which is up from 15,000RPM in previous generations. There’s also a pair of capacitive shoulder triggers, which have been upgraded with a 400Hz touch response rate and new actions that can be linked to them.

RedMagic sent us the Chinese variant of the RedMagic 6 – sadly not the Pro – ahead of the global launch, and it comes in Eclipse Black. The standard version has 12GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, and it costs $599. You can check out our first impressions in the video below, and stay tuned for our full review in the near future.
